Category description With the dawn of the patient rights movement in the 1970’s patient autonomy and equitable standards of care for patients became a component of common elements of medical practice. Some might argue that the movement away from a more paternalistic practice of medicine has empowered patients with regard to control over healthcare decisions, but also has severely limited the rights of healthcare professionals. This phenomenon has led to fervent discussion concerning whether or not the rights of healthcare professionals have in turn be violated. This forum post will focus on a healthcare professional’s right to refuse treatment and the case described will help facilitate discussion.
